Washing Machine Guide
Washing machines have come a long way from those pea green monsters we had 30 years ago. They're quieter, more efficient and some even clean your clothes better. They look better too, modern design and sleek finishes add a touch of style to a once utilitarian machine.
What are the different types of washing machines?
The higher the spin speed, the more water will be extracted from your clothes. So choosing a washer with a quicker spin cycle will reduce your drying time.
1000 spin speed = 90mins drying time*
1200 spin speed = 80mins drying time*
1600+ spin speed = 70mins drying time*
If you regularly wash delicate items such as silks or fine cottons, you may want to consider a machine with ‘variable spin speed’. This will allow you to select a lower spin speed and protect your garments.

Energy efficiency and performance ratings
All modern washing machines are given a grade from ‘A to E’, depending on their Energy Efficiency. This same grading system applies to Wash and Spin performance. If the machine has been ‘A-Rated’ in either category, this means that it is the best in each performance category. A machine that has a 'AAA' rating means it has the ultimate performance in all three categories.
Energy (Energy Efficiency) - ‘A-Rated’ machines offer the highest energy efficiency. This will save you money on both electricity and detergent.
Spin (Spin Efficiency) - ‘A-Rated’ machine's spin cycles provide maximum water extraction which will reduce drying times.
Wash (Performance Rating) - ‘A-Rated’ machines ensure maximum cleaning results even on the most stubborn of stains.
Wash loads
The greater a machine's tub capacity, the more clothes you can wash at a time. Which means you can wash fewer loads, saving you both time and money.
4.5kg (10lbs) - This is the standard wash capacity for most machines. It's ideal for most people (especially single people) plus, some models offer ‘mini loads’ or one item wash features for added convenience.
5.5kg (12lbs) - Larger capacity machines are great for washing those bulky items like bath towels and duvets. They're especially handy for families and will cut mom's wash time down considerably.
7kg (15.5lbs) - Washing machines with this large of a load capacity will allow you to wash a king size duvet, or enough clothes to outfit an entire soccer team. These type of washers are best for large families, or commercial use. However, washing small loads in a large drum will help reduce creasing and make ironing easier and quicker.
Special features
Hand Wash - This is a Gentle cycle you can use to wash ‘hand wash only’ garments.
Titled Drum - Most machines have standard, upright drums, but more expensive models use new technology including an angled drum for easy loading and reduced water consumption. Plus, many models have a 'contrarotator' where one end spins opposite of the other for 2 way wash action, giving you much cleaner clothes.
Open During Cycle - This allows you to open the door while the machine is washing so you can add that sock you forgot about or dropped along the way.
Child Lock - An added safety feature which locks the door shut during operation to prevent kids from hurting themselves.
