Dishwasher Guide
Dishwashers have become commonplace in most UK kitchens today. Apart from saving time and water, dishwashers also minimise kitchen clutter. Most households that do not have a dishwasher are probably deterred by the lack of space in their kitchen. Portable dishwashers are here to solve their problem!
You can buy an average dishwasher for as low as £125. Most models come within the range of £200 to £300. European manufacturers like ASKO, Bosch and Miele make the best dishwashers, but they come with a price tag of £450 to £1000.
Some of the important features of a dishwasher are:
Guarantee and Warranty - Most models today come with different kinds of guaranties and warranties. To choose between manufacturers, read the fine print and see what is offered under different categories like Full Warranties, Limited Warranties etc. and for what duration.
Kind of Disposal - If possible, go for a dishwasher with hard food disposal so that you do not have to rinse your dishes before.
Spray arms and spray holes - The best dishwashers have two spray arms with a centre wash tower. The number of spray holes is not very important since not all of them are functional at the same time. However, go for a dishwasher that has smaller spray holes since they emit a faster spraying action resulting in better scrubbing action.
Capacity - Most models hold 10-14 place settings. You may want a larger model, if you have a large family or use your dishwasher frequently. Go for ‘tower-less’ or direct-feed dishwashers since the tower at the centre wastes a lot of space and is difficult to load around.
Adjustability - Look for flexible features like removable or foldable tines, adjustable racks, folding cup shelves and a silverware basket that can be loaded in multiple positions.
Noise - We Britons are a little intolerant when it comes to noise. Moreover, since kitchens are fast becoming the central hub of a home, go for a dishwasher low on decibels and sones. The amount of insulation around the washing tub largely determines the sound levels.
Tip: Buy the best you can afford. Look for features like capacity, flexibility, noise, kind of disposal and guarantees.
