Computer Monitor Guide
A computer monitor is one of the most important components of a PC. The ideal computer monitor would be one that best suits your budget, space constraints and personal taste.
Some of the important considerations while choosing a computer monitor are:
Screen Size - The display size of a computer monitor is specified in terms of the diagonal measurement of the screen. The larger the display, the more the information your screen can contain at one time. Buy a computer monitor that has the right combination of display and resolution. A 15-inch CRT (cathode-ray tube) supports most office tasks. However, functions like desktop publishing require a 20-inch resolution since two full-size pages are to be displayed side by side.
Display Technology - The display of a computer monitor depends on cathode ray tubes (CRTs) and liquid crystal displays (LCDs).
CRT Displays - Consumers should keep in mind that the viewable image is never as large as the face of the CRT screen. The size advertised is the size of the tube measured diagonally and you should subtract one or two inches to get an idea about the viewable size.
LCDs - In the case of LCDs, however, the advertised size is same as the viewable size. Notebooks generally have LCDs since they are flat, lightweight and require little power. These features make LCDs attractive for desktops too.
New Technology Displays - Some of the latest display technologies for computer monitors include:
1. OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) combines the advantages of CRT and LCD. It has a flat-panel, emissive display and superior image quality.
2. Desktop rear projection They are similar to an LCD monitor but support high-resolution screens of 20 inches or more diagonally. The best part is that they are cheaper than CRTs or LCDs.
Points to remember before buying a computer monitor:
Don’t settle for a warranty of less than three years.
LCD’s often have pixel defects, so inquire about the replacement terms.
Go for a user-friendly screen menu.
Make sure your CRT supports the intended resolution.
Tip: Choose a computer monitor best suited to your space and budget restraints, function and intended resolution.
